Seamless Gutters St Louis
A little about who I am how, where and when Seamless Gutters St Louis came to be.
Hello my name is John Fletcher at 16 years of age I began working for my step father Emanuel Russo doing roofing, siding, soffit, fascia and guttering.
I never enjoyed roofing, but then again I cant believe anyone would or could say they enjoy being on a roof in 90 degree + temperatures with the sun beating down. I can even remember how happy it made me when a cloud pass over even if for a few minutes. When it came to putting down shingles I don’t believe there could have been anyone faster than Emanuel nailing four nails using a ( zax ) also known as roofing hammer also a great scrabble word.
( Tap, bang – tap, bang – tap, bang – tap, bang ) Emanuel could do that faster than most people can read it.
Siding, Soffit and Fascia work I did enjoy. I was fast and have a gift for looking at what needed to be covered and bending the shape in my mind. Working with a an aluminum break seamed to came as second nature to me. Truth is when something comes easy you will always tend to enjoy doing it.
What made Siding, Soffit and Fascia work most enjoyable was you could work is so you were almost always in the shade. In the morning you would set up on the west side of the house when beginning the day placing to aluminum break under a shade tree. As the day moved forward we would move around to the east side of the house as the afternoon sun was angling down from the west.
Guttering was always the last thing to be installed. This was 1978 and all you could buy were 20 foot and 33 foot sections of gutter. We would carry 33 foot sections of gutter to a job site by extending the 40 foot ladder on top of the ladder rack, then strapping the 33 foot pieces of gutter to the ladder. Emanuel didn’t like driving or even for that matter being in the truck when transporting the 33 foot lengths of gutter. So I always got the call to go pick up the guttering from Cardinal building material off McGree ave in St Louis.
One day in early September just before school was about to start, Emanuel had a roof to finish up on in St Louis and also a 1 story gutter installation in Kirkwood. Emanuel ask me around 6 am if I felt I could do the gutter installation on my own and come pick him up around 5 pm. I asked what the longest section of gutter was and he said 33 ft course.
I remember this 1st solo job well. Two 32 foot sections of 5 inch seamless gutters one on the front and one on the back with each having one 3 by 4 inch over sized downspout on each.
On my way to the job I decided to do this a little different than the way Emanuel had showed me. He would measure one gutter, tear it off cut the gutter to fit then in stalled it and move to the next section of gutter.
My plan was to remove all down spouts. Then to draw the gutters on the house as if looking down from the sky. Draw an o to represent the outlet and while still on the roof measure the gutter length and outlet placement. After I got my measurements while still being on the roof I removed the 32 foot sections of gutter taking all nails out to the right and left leaving one nail in the middle holding the section of old gutter at its center. Removing this final nail aloud me to remove the whole section of gutter dropping it down to a clear area. Now I marked the center of the fascia knowing I would have to put my 1st nail in the center of the gutter 1/2 inch down from the fascia top.
After I came down from the roof I off loaded the seamless gutters and clean up the area.
Now all left to do was cut gutter length, end cap, cut outlets, insert grover hangers and mark the center of the 32 foot seam less gutter. Now I’m ready to install the gutter and down spouts.
The roof was very walkable so I was able to take both section of gutter on to the roof and install at the center edge of the roof. Once I had center mark of my gutter matched up with the center mark on the fascia I drove the 1st nail in 1/2 way. Moving to the far end away from the outlet I raised the gutter as high as i could on the fascia. Now moving to where the gutter outlet was I raise it until my level told me I had a gentle down hill slope.
Once the seamless gutters were installed I attached the 3 by 4 over sized down spouts and I was done.
I had dropped Emanuel off on the roof job at 7 am pick up the gutter material at 7;30 am was at the job site by 8:30 and now on my way back to the roof job where Emanuel all by 11:30 pm. Arriving at the roof job site at around 12 noon Emanuel’s first question was “Did you come all the way back here just for me to buy you lunch?” I had to respond yes of course I cant afford to eat on what you pay me. Then he asked laughing what I still needed to do on the gutter job. My response was done, done and done well to boot.
I stayed and helped Emanuel finish the roof and we got done around 3:30 pm so we drove over to the gutter site so he could give the Emanuel Russo seal of approval… He did and I told him how it would be nice if I could Just do Gutters because its was easy and quick. Emanuel told me if that what I wanted to do 1st i would have to let people know I just do gutters.
Kind of joking I told him I would call the company Just Gutters, but after saying it I liked the way it sounded.
The next week I ran a Seamless Gutter St Louis ad in the Webster-Kirkwood times in the St Louis County area for New Seamless Gutters, Repairs, Gutter Guards and Gutter Cleaning… My 1st week I received over 20 calls. @5 years later Seamless Gutters St Louis is still going strong..
